1) Describe the type of camerawork which has been used? Do you think it is effective?
Handheld- effective because it created a sense of urgency. God range of shots, e.g. wide shots, close ups etc.
Long shot, jumping forward in time.
A lot of moving camera shots, long shots created a good range of views for the different locations.
Good use of track shots throughout , helped covey the locations.
2) What type of sound has been used?
Music soundtrack- some of it went well with the visual but out of times where there was action the music was slow.
Sound is good, music fits well and there is screen.
The mix of music and sound was well balanced.
Strong use of non diegetic sound had no dialogue just the soundtrack, no talking throughout and the backing song helped to create a mysterious atmosphere.
3. How has the mise-en-scene been constructed?
Props- masks help portray the thriller genre.
Location- helped create tension and again portray the genre.
The use of masks allows characters with out revealing to much and this portrays the psycological genre.
Very few props used apart from essential like weaponery (Axes) , and clothing such as masks. The few props shows the thriller genre well.
you
4. What editing techniques have been used?
Jumps cuts. Helping the viewer to follow the plot. Discolouration conveys both protagonist and antagonist.
The colour filter was used and gave good effects along with the music.
5) Can you think any constructive criticism?
You didn't have credits which are normally in opening sequences:
some of the continuity could of been better
the title was very professional and good transitions
Too many locations and scenes
Make some of he editing as if it is more effective such as better slow during the cutting to speed crossing the field.
6) What was the most effective element of the production?
Mise-en-scene worked very well.
Continutiy in house worked well
Scream really good
Good narative.

'Hunted' Title
Above is a rough cut of what could be used in our opening sequence when the title appears on screen. This idea shows dark and basic colours to fit in with our genre and storyline, it also has the song that we have decided to use as our soundtrack. The use of effects were used in a minimalist way to give the title a more eerie feel.

Soundtrack for our main theme
As our main theme is thriller we feel that the chosen soundtrack 30 seconds to Mars - Hurricane is a great way to portray our genre. The elements in our thriller "Hunted" link to the music as it gives a sense of errie and mysteriness.
External Peer Feedback
The feedback we received externally we felt could of gone into more detail for example sound effects too loud - this doesn't tell us which clip or what. They outlines clear points of which we have clear solutions for which is the same as our internal peer feedback which shows similar points and clearly outlines how we need to improve. The following shows the pros and cons:
Pros
Pros
- Good storyline
- Camerawork - upstairs and in mirror - good angles
- Field - good jumpiness
- Good continuous filming
- Sound effects too loud
- Hear people talking and laughing
- Scenes are quite long - need to be shorter
- Meant to be thriller - boys laughing

Rough Cut Feedback
Camera Work - A lot of variety of shots used. The shot in the field has along duration and may bore the viewer. There were also a lot of jump cuts that work well and are smooth. Match on action shots were used well.
Mise-En-Scene - They used good props to symobolize the murder, they used white masks and an axe which created a murderous feel to the character. The location was good because it represented the scheduled place and is empty which adds to the atmosphere.
Sound - No sound was used other than diegetic sound when filming and there was non-character diolgue because the cameraman was speaking in the background.
Editing - The transitions and continuity is good and runs smoothly.
Our Coments;
We are overall happy with the feedback they supplied, highlighting our location and props were sufficient and helped creating our desired theme. Although we would like to point out there would be no diejettic sound exempt from the door slamming, and we would have a soundtrack over the top. Furthermore regretfully our 'murder scene' was in fact missing from the rough cut.

A few of our favourites
The Usual Suspects;
After a waterfront explosion, Verbal, an eye-witness and participant tells the story of events leading up to the conflagration. The story begins when five men are rounded up for a line-up, and grilled about a truck hijacking (the usual suspects). Least pleased is Keaton a crooked cop – exposed, indicted, but now desperately trying to go straight. The cops won’t leave him alone, however, and as they wait for their lawyers to post bail, he is talked into doing one more job with the other four. All goes tolerably well until the influence of the legendary, seemingly omnipotent “Keyser Soze” is felt. Although set in the modern day, it has much of the texture of the forties, plus suspense, intrigue (a fairly high body count), and lots of twists in the plot. This movie ranks #20 on the IMDB top 250 – and for a very good reason: it has a star studded cast, excellent direction, and excellent cinematography.
Se7en
And personally my favorite is that of the 1995 hit starring brad pit Se7en, this thriller portrays the exploits of a deranged serial-killer. His twisted midn involves choosing seven victims who represent examples of each of the Seven Deadly Sins. He then hands out horrific punishment to these sinners. Two cops, an experienced veteran of the streets who is about to retire and the ambitious young homicide detective hired to replace him, team up to capture the perpetrator of these gruesome killings. Unfortunately, they too become caught up in his twisted plans and mind, and in the end looses something rather personal to him.

Pyschological Thrillers- Definition
The extended definition of a psychological horror is that a follows " Psychological thriller" – Characters are no longer reliant on physical strength to overcome their brutish enemies (which is often the case in typical action-thrillers), but rather are reliant on their mental resources, whether it be by battling wits with a formidable opponent or by battling for equilibrium in the character's own mind. The suspense created by psychological thrillers often comes from two or more characters preying upon one anther's minds, either by playing deceptive games with the other or by merely trying to demolish the others mental state.
Our Refined Narative
As a group we have decided that our thriller opening sequence will have a sub-genre of action with mild horror aspects, such as the murder that is witnessed. We have decided to portray this through by having our sequence dimmly lit with diegetic sound, giving the viewer an eerie feel. As our opening sequence draws to a close, the witness is back in his home thinking he is safe until he sees a masked figure (the murderer) in his mirror. The scene them cuts to black with the sound carrying on with a scream from the witness as the 'Hunted' title logo appears on screen. This cuts out the elements of a horror as you don't see the murder of the character that has just been seen but you have questions as to what happened making it fall into the Thriller genre. Our story progresses after the opening sequence as the main character escapes and tries to find out what happened upon knowing that he is being hunted by the murderers.

Top tips for filming
The following filming techniques will be portrayed in our film "Hunted"
Editing
We wanted to film in the dark for our final work. as this was a difficult as we don't have the professional equipment. therefor we have decided to discolor our work and edit it to be darker so you get the effect of the darkness and it being tense because of the colour of the film.

Aditional Reseach- A detailed description into how to create a thriller
How to produce a thriller?
Develop a simple but cinematic story and script establishing the needed sense of danger for the main character and the other characters in the movie.
Common thriller story holds include suspense-filled chase scenes, "whodunnit" plotting that allows the audience to wonder who killed a character or who committed the crime in the story, shocking sounds and visuals that surprise the audience every now and then. This is shown within in our video when the killer pops up behind the protagonist in the bathroom scene.
Solidify the characters in your story in order to justify how they react to the many conflicts around them.this is evident with in the psychological aspect of our protagonist, and the recurring dream he has in the end leading to his schizophrenia.
Allow the camera to take on human qualities during the shoot by letting it roam around playfully in your various shots, also creates strong continuity, shown when the protagonist is scene fleeing the murder scene and also the point-of-view shot where the camera works like the eyes of the character. This allows the audience to share the same view of the scenes the way the character sees it.
High variance of editing, tight and long shots, short and long takes and moving and stationary shots to visually provide an effective succession of images, emotions and ideas.
Use sound, music and silence to evoke the needed emotions in every scene. Generally, a loud bang after a long established silence with only the sound of footsteps heard creates a feeling of being restless, nervous, tensed or alarmed.

Our Target Audience
Our target audience for "Hunted" will be from ages 16-30 (young adults - adults). The reason why we've chosen this age range is because we feel our film is appropriate for these ages because is has a lot of elements which include mild violence discreet language. This links to following films;
- Inception - A psychological thriller that gets the viewer involved in the storyline, which is what we are intending to do. We aim for the viewer to become attached to the story and intrigued to see how it progresses. This links to our target audience as it has similar elements and attaches the audience.
- PhoneBooth -A thriller based around murder that doesn't have gore which is the same as our thriller, and the captures the audience intently. The viewer wants to find out how it ends and you feel some passion towards him. This is similar to our target audience as it protrays a similar storyline as people are taken hostage and are threatened to be killed.
- Memento - A psychological thriller about a man who has a memory disability who wants to find out who killed his wife. To remember things he tatoos quotes on his body and takes polarode pictures. This connects to our target audience as it shows similar violence and language.

What We Learnt From Amar's Blog
From looking at Amar's blog, we learnt a number of key points to gain extra marks towards our Thriller opening.
A key thing we learnt from the blog is that planning is essential. From planning, we were told, we can either get ourselves a lot of marks, or lose ourselves a lot of marks, and planning counts towards a lot of our final mark and will help us in efficiency when making our film opening sequence.
There are a lot of different essential items that need to be covered before creating a film. The following blogs that we have completed shows that our film planning is up to date and will allow us to film efficiently and effectively;

Marking criteria task
Overall for our tak we would like to be getting levels from 3 to 4 trying to get the highest marks we can get.
Video:
so far we have covered, over half of the bullet point of this criteria. What we need to do left is to sort out the titles appropriately used and using sound with images for effects.
Resurch and Planning:
Video:
Level 3 -
- Framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate.
- Using a variety of shot distances as appropriate.
- Shooting material appropriate to the task set.
- Selecting mise-en-scene including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting.
- Editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewers.
- Using varied shot transition and other effects selectively and appropriately for the task set.
- Using sound with images and editing appropriately for task set.
- Using titles appropriately.
- Holding a shot steady, where appropriate.

Resurch and Planning:
Level 4-
- There is excellent research similar products and a potential target audience.
- There is excellent organisation of actors, locations, costume or props.
- There is excellent work on shot list, layouts, drafting, scripting or storyboard.
- There is an excellent level of care in the presentation of the research and planning.
- time management is excellent.
Font and Colour research of title sequence.
Our logo for our title sequence for Hunted is intended to be dark, mysterious but bold to stand out. It is intended to be jagged and borderline horror, but with thriller elements included.
An example of what we are looking for is the '9' logo which is also a thriller movie. The logo for '9' is bold and jagged and is also slightly horror looking but looks like a thriller logo as it doesn't suggest any upcoming gore. The glow and colour of the logo contrasting the dark background makes it stand out and look bold, as we are planning to do with our logo.
Another example is Inception. The logo for Inception has a light background with black writing, making the text stand out. The background being lighter makes the attention drawn to the detail put into it, with it looking like a maze, it suggests the storyline of the film could be similar to a maze.
However, Phonebooth is an example of what we aren't looking for as it has a lot going on in the background and it looks more like an action than a thriller. However, it is similar to ours in the way that the text is eye catching and stands out in contrast to the background.

Why Thrillers Thrive?
Thrillers thrive because they capturvate the audience. It portrays a sense of escapism. Thrillers are more itracute, whole hearted and are easily understood whereas horrors have to be toned down to be accepted by the public.
Thrillers thrive more than horrors because they lack in gore, whereas horrors focus on showing blood and other things that will make the audience uneasy. Thrillers are different because they make the audience want to engage more in the story, rather than see gore. Thrillers have the effect to make the audience be on "the edge of their seat" and they want to know what happens next, and instead of making the audience scared, it makes the audience excited and become attached to the story and are intrigued to find out how the story progresses.
To conclude, thrillers thrive more because they engage and capurvate the audience and every detail is very intracute and is accounted for, making the story flow. As the story goes on the audience become attached and don't feel as much as a viewer but more a part of the problem and resolution of the story, whereas with a majority of other films, the viewer goes for a sense of escapeism but with thrillers the viewer is engaged.

Top 2 - Thrillers Currently.
The following list of thrillers are the current top 2 according to IMDB ( international movie database);
1) 127 Hours - The story is about a man of whom out participating in high octane adventures and sports come a stuck when falling down a chasm and consequently leading to his arm being trapped as a bolder has fallen upon it this leads to the daunting prospect has he plucks up the courage, using a blunt pen knife to chop of his own arm. The thriller aspect of this film can be seen where he is venturing into the un known and gripps the audience about how he come to the decision to chop off his own arm.
2) Inception - A film featuring the emmencely overated actor that is leanordo DiCaprio, suffice to say its a very far fetched film with the genral synopsis going somewhat like this its about a thief who possesses the power to enter into the dreams of others, and preety much steals there ideas. and thats about that, the thriller aspect of this dull and monotenous film comes from the pyschological aspect and the fact the audience are gripped as well as this it featurs other typical thriller conventions such as that of suspence and both antagonists and protragonisits.

Reseach - So what actually is the difference between a horror and a thriller ?
So what actually is the difference between a horror and a thriller ? , yes that is the question of to which i have been posed and to many the line is fairly blurred but through this blog post i wish un blur the line by which is currently blurred.
For this we take horror- The one of which we have chosen is that of the blatant horror 'Friday the 13th'
As well as a thriller of which is the much loved phone booth
After analysing the opening scenes of both we have come up with a few similarities and differences.
Similarities:
The opening scene introduce the main characters in both for eg in phone booth the main character and in Friday the 13th there is an insight to to main characters specifically 'Jason' the killer.
There is also for both a strong introduction to the location, in the horror the forest crystal lake to be precise as well as although a bit more vague the fact its set in new york for the thriller phone booth.
Differences:
The death scenes are maximised and prolonged, also no relationship for the victims can be built up as the murders are so quick etc.
Summary:
I feel from in depth and prolonged research i feel that a thriller is a movie based on suspense, showing especially the victim's point of of view. To me, horror is more about showing "horrid" things on screen such as murders or torture. The suspense in a thriller does not necessarily result in gruesome acts.

Mise En Scene for "Hunted"

Production Logo Research
20th Century Fox
20th Century Fox is a well known production company. Their logo is predominantly Gold coloured with a dark blue background. Because of the dark background, the text ("20th Century Fox") stands out.
The main franchises that are owned by 20th Century Fox are as follows;
- Star Wars
- Die Hard
- Home Alone
- Ice Age
- X-Men
- The Simpsons
- Family Guy
- 24
The franchises owned by 20th Century Fox are mainly television based as apposed to being film based. This production company doesn't release many thriller genre movies meaning there is nothing that they have released that can be compared to the genre we are studying.
DreamWorks
The DreamWorks production logo is made up of dark colours (black and dark blue/purple) with white text over the top. Like 20th Century Fox, the text stands out on the logo and makes it more eye-catching.
DreamWorks have released a number of films over a variety of genres. A main thriller film that has been released by DreamWorks is The Lovely Bones. The Lovely Bones is adapted from a novel and has sub-genres of horror and action. This film is a good comparison to our opening sequence as it has a similar storyline. The Lovely Bones also has the same two sub-genres as our opening sequence, as we aim to use some elements of horror and some of action.
New Line Cinema
The New Line Cinema production logo is similar to DreamWorks in the way that both have a dark background with white text. Due to the white text, it stands out and is more eye-catching than if it had a darker text that would match the background.
Before being bought out by Warner Bros, New Line Cinema released a number of films over a number of genres. Some of the films released by New Line Cinema fall into the thriller genre. An example of this that could be compared to our opening would be Shoot 'Em Up. Shoot 'Em Up is a thriller film with a sub-genre of action, which is what we are aiming to have in our thriller opening sequence.

Presentation Feedback
We were given feedback on our presentation and were told things that were good about our evaluations and what we needed to improve.
Areas to improve where as follows;
Areas to improve where as follows;
- The storyline needs to clearer. Some people felt as though we weren't certain on what we had chosen to use in our final piece and what bits we were still deliberating on.
- Another issue raised was the health and safety issues within using the weapons in our project. There was a concern about whether or not the weapon was deactivated or not.
- Another health and safety issue raised was that of us being in a secluded area at night, so concern was raised about the state of our well-being, which has been resolved by obtaining a chaperon to come along with us to make sure nothing goes wrong, and if it does, it will be resolved quickly. This will be stated in our risk assessment which will be completed at a later date.
- An area we were questioned on was that of our camera shots, as people were not sure if we were going to film holding the camera or with a tripod but this had already been decided as using both handheld and tripod shots, depending on whether or not it was a chase scene or not and what would be easier and what shot we wanted. This had been decided but was not stated on the blog, causing confusing.
- Finally, we were asked about our story line, and what was our final idea. However, we were able to answer this quickly because we were able to clear up this matter as we knew what our story was going to be, we just hadn't stated it as clearly as we had intended to.
- We were told that we described each point was done well and that the detail was all very clear. We were told that the level of detail was good, because in a majority of points we didn't leave key areas out, and went into detail about big and small details as to not cause confusion.
- We were also told that our explanations for the issues with our presentation cleared up any queries e.g. about our health and safety, where it was just a case of not having it added to the blog at the point of the presentation.
Opening soundtrack -
This was our initial idea for our opening soundtrack after about 2 minutes in, which is the same song we used for our preliminary task as we tested it to see if it fitted the genre of 'thriller'. We chose this as the piano at the start of the song creates a suspense and with the lyrics going along with what's happening in the sequence. We felt it fitted in with the genre because it creates suspense and an atmosphere which fits in with the scene. As the song progresses, the song speeds up and becomes fast-paced and suspenseful which fits in well with the scene as the chase scene starts. This builds the story and the characters as it reflects what's going on in the story. The song will be played throughout and will be faded out at the end as the opening comes to a close and as the main story starts. As we are only filming the opening to the thriller we felt this song would fit well with the scene to introduce the characters, and to establish the main character witnessing the crime and getting away, which will then flow into the following story of him evading the two murderers that he witnessed committing the crime.
Production Logo
Ass productions is our chosen 'production company' the ass coming from the american term for a type of donkey, our inspiration for this original and fairly humurous idea came from the famous 'dick house productions' as of featured in the famous and much loved 'Jackass Franchise' We feel it is an unique design and slightly witty at that, we are also proud of the logo featuring a donkey ' the ass' with glowing eyes and a darkened background which will also fit with our thriller narative. The writing is also easy to read a flows constructivly around the donkeys back.Futhermore feedback was possitive from the target audience of our thriller.

Planning For Our Presentation
Narative:
After an initial brainstorm of potential ideas (listed below);
We then want onto establishing asuitable location and finalizing certain aspects of our initial narative brainstorm the result is as listed below.
Charechters:
The Victim- Only featured for a brief moment this role will possibly be played by laura t and her role consists of being murdered.
Killers / Antagonists- these two roles of the same nature are to be played by the other laura as well as Steve-o this role will consist of killing the other laura/victim seeing the protragonist has witnessed there escapades and then persuing him for the rest of the movie. These charechters will be eerie and clearly superioer to the protragonist.
The witness/ Protragonist - This role will be played by James and will consist of not only being beautiful and charasmatic but also escaping from the killers after winessing the murder but also to portay emotion to the audience.
The Sub Genre:
The sub genre of our Thriller is to be Action this will be portrayed throuh the high intensity chase scene(s) one of shown in the opening sequence but also through the fight scenes. As well as many other of the micro elements prtrayable within the Action subgenre.
Costume ideas:
After an initial brainstorm of potential ideas (listed below);
- Balaclavas, as masks, for 'baddies' / Antagonist
- Narative, boy and girl, girl gets murdered boy spends movie running away.
- Specific narrative of opening sequence, guy and girl walking through forest 'antagonist(s)' jump out and kill girl through a beating of baseball bats then guy escapes after chase accompanied with tense music and reaches home before fading to black for the rest of the movie.
- Location - A forest with nearby 'house'
We then want onto establishing asuitable location and finalizing certain aspects of our initial narative brainstorm the result is as listed below.
- Masks are now infact typical white theatre masks as we feel this will not only be more visable to the camera as we aim to film at night but also to keep up the thriller and suspence aspects. and also we feel to often in media the balaclava is featured and sterteotypical of robbers, where as ,asks are something fairly un known inturn creating a sence of mystery to the charechters inturn the audience.
- The location for filming has now been clarified to be at a member of our groups home/ village which we believe to be sufficent.
- Also the overall narrative has somewhat been adapted with a man (protagonist) this time in fact returning home through the forest and witnessing a murder and the antagonists hunting him down so there was not a witness. Within the opening sequene after realising what he has witnessed he after a short chase returns home where other conventions of the thriller genre will be portrayed.
- Also other aspects have been changed as to heighten the sense of danger, as of opposed to the antagonists weapons being baseball bats we are now using deactivated shotguns as well as the weapon featured in the grim reaper.

Thriller garage band
The music we have constructed was done because we thought it fit in appropriately with the genre of Thriller as the music was quite suspense and upbeat.
Analysis of Thriller opening sounds
Catch Me If You Can
In the first few seconds within the opening scenes of Cacth Me If You Can it starts with a jazzy theme song for the first two minutes followed by non-diegetic sounds of "Shh" and fingers clicking in time with the music.
Vertigo
Straight away the scene start of with fast jumpy music like in a chase scene. Hearing footsteps running and you see people running, then having non-diagetic sounds such as people shouting, screaming and booming going along with the scene.
Face Off
The music in the opening of Face Off is dark followed by sound effects such as the gunshot, which is deigetic. The music is also coming from the merrygoround which can come across as nostaligic. The music fits with the storyline and we feel some what emotion for the protagonist.

Difference between thriller and horror -
Rec is a horror for a number of reasons: The film contains a huge amount of blood and protrays more gore then suspense. This is consequently different as shown in Phone Booth which is dragged out and we feel some sort of emotion towards the protagonist as there is generally only one compared to a horror where there are generally many characters and these usually die unexpectedly. The music used is normally a lot deeper and it may just be diagetic sound compared with a thriller where there is no foreshadowing through the music.

Preliminary task and evaluation
For our preliminary task, we were instructed to script, film and edit a 30 second thriller snippet, just as we were for our children's film project. However, we felt we struggled as we made it too long and we had problems with the camera adjusting to sudden brightness change. Other then this we each contributed to filming and being in the task.
One of the micro elements we used to create the film was music to emphaises the sense of danger and suspense.
